VISSLA - North Seas Wetsuit (Directed by Edgar Obrand)

This short commercial was our main stylistic inspiration. Containing a color palette that relates to 60s/70s analog film and marine life. What this commercial does well is bringing its message in a fun manner. Making it more light. Especially in times of mass (mostly negative) media, this video could stand out. Also this video gave us a sense of platform and target audience.

Microplastics found in 90 percent of table salt

This article was most important when developing the theme of our film. I knew I wanted to do something with environmental awareness within the social practice, this was something that had me interested. Because of the theme of this assignment, containing salt, this article gave us the opportunity to make environmental awareness accessible, talking about it trough salt. Which is something everyone uses and is immediately close to ourselves.

The study in this article was done by researchers in South Korea and Greenpeace East Asia. Claiming that 90% of all table sea salt contained microplastics.

China wil ons plastic niet meer, dus gooien we het hier in de verbrandingsoven

WE’RE BUYING INTO A GIANT LIE ABOUT PLASTIC

This article was especially useful when researching the effects of our own plastic waste. This text made me aware of the fact that a huge part of our waste gets transported to other countries. But now with china having enough of it, more problems will arise. Making the change of it ending up in nature and the sea in general, way bigger than before. Raising a question for me personally; who is responsible for this?

"Some of the plastic is also piling up on the world’s remote beaches. Last year, researchers estimated that the size of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — as the huge mass of trash in the Pacific Ocean has become known — weighed at least 87,000 tons. "

With a pinch of salt

Our project is about the fact that 90% of all table sea salt contain microplastic. This fact was something that personally struck me and made me even more aware that microplastic is already a big treat at this given moment and not something that will be a treat for our lives and health in the far future. The goal of our project is to make the viewer aware of the plastic that is already within their food and showing how it is the viewer that plays a huge part within the process of plastics becoming as small as microplastics.

When working on this project, I noticed several problems within the world politics and the consumerism. Letting me see that this problem is so much more relevant now that I thought it was. Just only the fact that our waste gets transported to foreign counties was something that I didn’t stand still by. I don’t think people stand still and realize this either.

Our view on the microplastic problem is mostly ecological and social. Wanting to change a habit that is generally bad for the environment, but directly effecting our health as well. This habit is mainly about the use of pastics in our daily life, which is still increasing at this moment. With our short video we try to confront the viewer with this problem in a not too heavy but light hearted way. Salt is the perfect tool when addressing microplastic, since it is something we all use daily. Yet not the only thing we consume on a daily basis that contains different forms of plastic that eventually end up directly in our body, or indirectly trough ending up in the ecological system and eventually in our food chain.
The timeline we used to structure the concept of our short film.
